Cold War

During the Cold War, Whitney Galbraith served his country as a member of the United States Navy during the Cold War from 1959 to 1964.  In this interview, he shares not only his story of service, but of is fathers, Col. Nicoll Galbraith.

Colonel Galbraith (May 19, 1896 – February 23, 1986) enlisted in the U.S. Army on April 25, 1917, and served with the 14th Cavalry.  During World War II, he was captured in the Philippines following the surrender of Corregidor in May 1942 and spent over three years in various Japanese prisoner-of-war camps, including those in Taiwan, Japan, and Manchuria.  For his gallantry in action from January 2 to 4, 1942, Galbraith was awarded the Silver Star. His citation highlights his bravery in evacuating supplies under enemy fire, actions that significantly contributed to the prolonged defense of Bataan.  After the war, Colonel Galbraith documented his experiences in a memoir titled "Valley of the Shadow," which provides a detailed account of his time as a POW and offers insights into the psychological and emotional effects of war.
